Mission Statement of the Department:
We are a specialized Security Department charged with the responsibility of providing personal security for specific University officials, protecting lives and properties in all University premises particularly, the main campus, staff quarters, staff school and University students’ hostel while aiding the maintenance of law and order in the University.
A brief History of the Creation, Past and Current Leadership of the Department
The University employed six security guards as original crops of security personnel to establish the Security Department of the University under the Office of the Vice Chancellor in year 1983. Part of the duties of the Security men was to provide personal security for specific University officials.
One of the six security men then acted as the Security Officer over the few others until the University took the step to employ a well qualified Chief Security officer (CSO) with the increase in the number of staff of the department. Successive Chief Security Officers of the University from inception were Mr. Alonge, Mr. Ologuntoye, Captain Tunde Ajayi Samuel (Rtd.) and Mr. Fakeye Adebayo Francis. The current Acting CSO - Mr. Adebayo Adeyemi, was a pioneer Security staff of the University after being discharged from the Nigerian Army. He took over substantive leadership of the Department till he also reached his retirement age in year 2009. However, the University had retained his services till date as Acting Chief Security Officer.
General Information on the Framework and Services of the Department:
The mission of the Department is to also guarantee maximum security of lives and properties on the University campus, every day and night of the week. The comprehensive nominal roll of the security department consist of One hundred and Ninety Three (193) Uniformed Security operatives apart from Twenty three (23) Night-Guards, bringing the total number of staffs to Two Hundred and Sixteen (216) Security men in the University Security Department. The list below shows the number of security men in the various rank and files as follows: PATROL MEN – 35, SENIOR PATROL MEN – 68, ASSISTANT PATROL SUPERVISOR- 51, PATROL-SUPERVISOR – 20, SENIOR PATROL SUPERVISOR – 15, ASSISTANT SECUIRTY OFFICER – 2, SECURIYT OFFICER – 1, CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER – 1 and NIGHT – GUARDS – 23. The material outfits for security officials are light blue shirt and Black trouser for men, and skirt and blouse of the same colour for women with blue cap.
General Information on the Organs and Activities of the Department
There is no gender discrimination in recruitment into the Security Department. Hence, there are Nine (9) Women Officers in the Security Department. Candidates were recruited to Security Department after having possessed a minimum of Senior School Certificate, Certificate of medical fitness from a recognized public health service centre, undergone thorough exercises and interviews. The objectives of recruiting and training the crops of the Security men is to stamp out all anti-social vices and illegal activities on campus such as cultism, drug addiction, armed robbery, rape, sexual harassment and violation of the provisions of the laws of the University and other laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria etc. The Security Department also operates hotlines and uses the email to gather information and complaints from anonymous sources from time to time.
The major Units of the Security Department apart from the Office of the Chief Security Officer and its Central Security Administration are mentioned below:
1.0 INTELLIGENCE UNIT
This unit is responsible for performing detective roles on campus. They work on security information at hand and reports incident to the Chief Security Officer for prompt action. They functions mostly is the collection of information about student involved in cultism, examination malpractices and misconduct. They also conduct detective work on cases of fraud, admission racketeering and allegations of stealing among members of staffs and submitting situation reports to the University Management after proper investigation had been conducted on the suspects. At times, offender or suspect could be apprehended by means of invitation which is better than making an arrest.
2.0 INVESTIGATION UNIT
This Unit that is very important in the security department, because of their sensitive function. They take caution and enormous pain in getting precise information on suspect and conduct their investigation mostly hand in hand with the intelligence Unit. They at times put their suspect under surveillance of the intelligence unit to really ascertain culpability before recommending to the University’s Management. They also advice the management and recommends commensurable and appropriate disciplinary measure. They work in collaboration with the Police and the State Security Services (SSS) if suspect decided to run away or further investigation activities.
3.0 UNIVERSITY SECURITY TASK FORCE
The University Security Task force was inaugurated by the administration of Prof. Dipo Kolawole to boast the security strategies and needs of the University. The crops of Officers and men in the Unit are empowered to arrest suspects and persons of security risk who commits punishable offence through rapid intervention and quick investigation to forestall the breakdown of law and order in the University community. They also operate in the area of enforcing University dressing code for Students, control and eradication of illicit and unauthorized trading and hawking on campus, prevention of vandalism and damage to University properties, reckless driving on campus and adequate security in examination centres to prevent cheating and fraud.
