The Aims and Objectives of the university


 

It is obvious that at the time of creation of this University, the developmental plans and Government policies in Nigeria were aimed at modernizing and developing the nation’s economy, the overall human and natural resources, full integration of the society into national life, the development of public sphere and motivation of private sphere in Nigeria’s socio-economic strata and the use of the various constituents of the nation as ultimate catalyst for

national development. Hence, these parameters formed the basis of the founding fathers’ envisioned aims and objectives for the University with its relevance to socio-educational development as an enduring goal as follows:-

i.    To provide facilities for learning and to give instruction and training in such branches of knowledge as the University may desire to foster and in doing so to enable students obtain the advantage of liberal education.
ii.    To promote by research and other means the advancement of knowledge and its practical application to social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological problems;
iii.    To encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of races, creed, sex or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring a higher and liberal education;
iv.    To act as a vehicle of national development in general and in particular to act as an agent of State development through applied research, technical assistance, direct consultation, information services and internship programmes;
v.    To provide innovative educational programmes of high standard regardless of the nature of the degree being pursued as long as this had importance and relevance for State and national development;
vi.    To provide ready access for citizens of the State in particular to higher education, regardless of social origin or income;
vii.    To meet the specific manpower needs of the State;
viii.    To serve as a custodian, promoter and propagator of the State’s social and cultural heritage;
ix.    To undertake any other activities appropriate for a University of the highest standard.

 


 


The University from the out-set consistently pursued the above stated goals with a motto: FOR SERVICE AND INTEGRITY.
