A brief History of the Creation, Past and Current Leadership of the Association
The first set of graduates of the University graduated with Bachelors degree in 1986, which enabled them to come together with the aim to networking and formulating programmes for the future development of the University and the promotion of scholarship. On 30th August, 1988, nine graduates of the University led by Mr. Stephen Akinsipe, Professor Samuel Sunday Asaolu and Dr. Ayan Adeleke met at the University to form a group of the University Alumni and on 20th February 1990, the Ondo State University Alumni Association was launched with the appointment of an Administrative Committee comprising of Mr. Stephen Bulla Akinsipe as Chairman, Mr. Ayo Olofuntila as Secretary and Mrs. Bello as Treasurer.
In 1992, a substantive Executive Committee was elected to run the affairs of the Alumni Association under the chairmanship of Mr. Stephen Akinsipe. By 1994, the Executive Committee was re-elected with Mr. Stephen Akinsipe as the Alumni President and Alumni Representative on the Governing Council. No election was held again until 8th August 1998 when Dr. Peter Sunday Ogundana was elected as the Alumni President with Mr. Gbenga Faseluka as Secretary and Mr. Busuyi Ayorinde as Treasurer.
In December, 2000, the tenure of the Ogundana led Executive Council was ended when Mr. Kole Ajayi was elected National President of the Alumni Association with Dr. Bimbo Odu as National Secretary and Mr. Lanre Ogunjobi as National Treasurer. In May, 2004, another election was held that ushered in Mr. Olawale Jegede as Alumni President and Alumni Representative on the Governing Council with Mr. Jadesola Babatola as National Secretary and Mr. Adekunle Adeyemo as National Treasurer.
In July 2007, two conventions were held as a result of divisions in the Association. One produced Mr. Jadesola Babatola as the National President of the Alumni Association and Alumni Representative on the Governing Council with Prince Wale Gbadamosi as National Secretary and Engr. Kunle Musa as National Treasurer, while the other produced a factional leader - Sir W.O. Adebayo as Alumni President. When the University Management brokered peace in the division, it accepted Mr. Jadesola Babatola as the Alumni President and Alumni Representative on the Governing Council and merged the two factions.
In 2009, a leadership tussle and crisis of confidence ensued between some Trustees, Mr. Jadesola Babatola and his National Executive Council which was resolved with the dissolution of Executives and the handing over of the Association to the University, who later invited Board of Trustees to appoint a Caretaker Committee for the Association until election is held in year 2010. The Chairman of the Committee is Hon. Omotayo Abidakun while the Secretary/Treasurer is Mr. Jide Akinyemi.
