NUC scores UNAD high in post-UTME screening

National Universities Commission (NUC) has scored the University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD), Ekiti State high in the just concluded post-UTME screening exercise.

In the appraisal given by an official of the Commission, Mr. Patrick Adaidu, who monitored the exercise, the screening was described as “one of the best” in Nigerian universities.

Mission Statement of the Department:

 

The Faculty of Science has the mandate of the Senate of the University to carry out the teaching, research and examination for the award of degrees of the University in the following field of Basic Sciences namely:- Bio-Chemistry, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematical Sciences, Microbiology, Physics, Plant Science and Zoology.

A brief History of the Creation, Past and Current Leadership of the Faculty:

Faculty of Science was one of the three Pioneer Faculties (i.e. Arts, Science and the Social Sciences) established in November, 1982 by the Senate of the University to facilitate the commencement of lectures for the 136 students admitted as 1st set of undergraduates which spread over the Faculties.

Over the years, the Faculty developed with its various Departments over the years while meeting challenges and philosophy of the tertiary institution as “a Developmental University”. The Faculty has 46 Academic members of staff with Doctor of Philosophy degrees and 56 Academic members of staff engaged with Ph.D Programme. This is an evidence of its commitment to high standard and foundation on which the Faculty is built up.

Past leadership and Deanship of the Faculty from inception included Prof. A. Olubumo, Prof. S.K. Ogundana, Prof. Mrs. O.A. Egunjobi, Prof. S.I. Ette, Prof. O. Famurewa, Prof. O. Olaofe, Prof. M.A. Faluyi, while the current Dean of the Faculty is Prof. S.S. Asaolu. The Faculty Officer who reports to the Dean for the day to day administration of the Faculty Office and who statutorily serves as Secretary of various Committees of the Faculty is Mr. A.R. Babatunde, a Senior Assistant Registrar.


General Information on the Framework and Services of the Faculty:

The Faculty offers Basic Science courses and advanced courses channeled towards solving developmental needs of the state as well as the entire nation. Presently, the Faculty offer courses in Basic and Applied Sciences in the field of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Geology, Mathematical Sciences (made up of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science), Microbiology, Physics, Plant Science and Zoology. In addition to these, the Faculty offer Master and Doctorate degree programmes and Bachelor’s degree programmes in Science and Laboratory Technology.

The Faculty actually commenced remedial programme in the University at the early stages of its existence before it was transferred to the Pre-Degree Programme. The goal was to support the national policy which generally recommends a 60/40% ratio for enrolment of Science/Humanities candidates in the University system with a view to improve the nation’s scientific development and advancement as a whole.

The Faculty’s role apart from its aim of imparting knowledge in Basic and Applied Sciences through training, research and extension services for sustainable development is to offer existing ground-work for strong undergraduate programmes that will permit our graduates to compare well for the programme anywhere with considerable diversity within their areas of concentration from the mainstream of modern science and technology.

To achieve the above, priority attention are given towards providing excellent research facilities for development of laboratories, development of world class undergraduate, expanded knowledge in the use and application of ICT, increased knowledge in research and research application to development, promotion of relationship with all institutions with similar aims and objectives throughout the world and participation in private, grassroots and national development through application of Science to practical knowledge.
